The Timeless "Emporium" Spirit of Essence of Life
If you wandered through the Airlie Beach markets back in the early 2000s, you might remember a stall tucked under the old Bodhi trees on the foreshore. It was known affectionately as ‘the emporium’ – a treasure trove of hammocks, musical instruments, antique books, and healthy food.
Fast forward over two decades, and while the location and the world have changed, the heart of that emporium is beating stronger than ever.
Meet Diane Astbury, the creative force behind Essence of Life Emporium.
For Diane, Essence of Life isn’t just a business; it’s the result of a lifelong love affair with quality clothing, art, and the unique lifestyle that the Whitsundays offers.
Diane is a true veteran of the local market scene. In 2000, she helped start the Queens Beach market (the first outdoor market in Bowen) while simultaneously building her presence in Airlie Beach. Today, she brings that wealth of experience and “freedom of creativity” to every cruise ship market day.
While many visitors meet Diane at the Airlie Beach Foreshore during cruise ship arrivals, her impact on the community goes much deeper. Based in her physical store in Jubilee Pocket, Diane has created a hub for local artisans and sustainable fashion.
“We really love the variety of people who come to the markets and the feedback for our products,” Diane says. “We focus on natural materials and styles that actually suit our tropical climate.”
What makes Essence of Life truly unique is Diane’s commitment to the “Artisan” spirit. Her stall and shop are filled with:
Upcycled Clothing: Giving new life to pre-loved garments with a focus on natural fibers.
Local Artisan Collaborations: Diane doesn’t just sell her own work; she encourages and stocks the creations of other local makers.
Creative Workshops: From paper flower making to health modalities and upcycling techniques, Diane is passionate about sharing her skills with the community.
Whether you are a local looking for a unique piece of wearable art or a cruise passenger searching for a memory of the Whitsundays that wasn’t mass-produced, Diane’s stall is a must-visit.
You can find Essence of Life Emporium at the Saturday markets, every Cruise Ship market day on the foreshore, or visit her boutique in Jubilee Pocket (Monday to Friday, 10 am – 5 pm).
